OUR HISTORY
Prince of Peace held its first service with a congregation of 101 in the Wilson Professional Building at 4111 Hubbell Avenue in September 1960. POP became a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC) in December 1960, and the church constitution was adopted at that time.

The first wedding at Prince of Peace was in February 1961.

In May of 1961 services were held in the Park Fair Shopping Center on E. Euclid Avenue. A permanent location was established that same year at East 25th and Euclid Avenue. The first services in our new location were held in October 1961 with 50 families and 226 baptized members.

The current sanctuary was dedicated in October 1977. A much needed elevator addition was built in 2008 making the building handicap accessible and improving access through the east entrance.

Prince of Peace became part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, also known as the ELCA in 1987.

In 2010 Prince of Peace celebrated its 50th anniversary. We continue to foster and affirm the spirit of our mission for God's Kingdom. We offer traditional service formats and in 1983, began offering contemporary music services, a tradition that continues through the present.

The Lutheran Church began as a reform movement in Northern Europe in 1517. Martin Luther was the leader of this movement. His studies of the gospel convinced him that we are saved by faith not works. Lutheran churches are found across the globe in Germany and Scandinavia, East Africa, India, Indonesia and the United States. In the US, the ELCA is one of several Lutheran churches, with 3.5 million members.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is a participating congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The presiding bishop of the ELCA is Elizabeth Eaton. The ELCA is organized around 62 synods, and Prince of Peace is part of the Southeastern Iowa Synod, with offices in Iowa City. The bishop of our synod is Amy Current.
